Hello Fellow Villagers!!!

Let's Pack the Hall! We are only one week away from the tremendous benefit concert "Rhythm of the People" at Festival Place and we need to sell more tickets to reach our goal and "bring a smile to an orphan's face!"

Mercy Children Centre motto: To Make a Smile to an Orphan.

Read it here! Article in Sherwood Park News: March 20, 2008.

This event brings an incredible line up of well-known artists: Bomba Quartet, Tacoy Ryde, the Rault brothers, Christian Mena, Stewart McDougall and much more. And don't forget the Memeza Africa Choir from Soweto, South Africa, accompanied by Holly Wright!

We're also holding a silent auction with breath-taking art from Africa, Asia, and by local artists from Edmonton. The African art display will feature beautiful prints from Kenya, wood sculptures, jewellery and so much more.

We need YOU to make this event an enormous success. Here's how you would be contributing to Mercy Children Centre’s school in Bumala, Kenya just by attending the concert!

  • Help install a water pump: Last month a water well had to be dug manually at the school. Access to water became a sudden and serious priority when the humanitarian crisis after the December 2007 Kenyan election resulted in the school losing its only water source from a neighbouring school. Cost:$500.

  • Help support the school lunch program: Food has become a greater priority since December 2007 as inflation continues to put this basic necessity out of reach for many poverty-stricken families. Cost: $50/day for 90 children.

  • Help purchase shoes for all of the children: Although most of the students are clothed, none have shoes at this time which increases their risk of developing the preventable medical condition “tungiasis” from the human parasite Tunga penetrans. Approx. Cost: $5/pair.

  • Help add a classroom to the school: Education continues to be out of reach for newly orphaned children who are poverty-stricken. Cost: $3,000/classroom.

  • Help build new dormitories: Many children who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS are abandoned by extended family and the community amidst the harsh realities of poverty. Cost: $10,000.
