Many thanks to all who attended our 3rd Annual Fundraiser. With your generosity we were able to raise $14,000!! We have been very busy ever since. Below are some of the projects we've been working on at the Mercy Centre school in Bumala, Kenya. Steps toward self-sustainability...
|

|
More Crops!
One Child's Village was able to purchase additional land next to the school, some of which will be used to supplement their current crop output. More maize and sukumawiki means more full bellies more of the time! |
| |
Water Collection System
Mercy Centre had received a water tank from some donors, but they did not have the funds to install it. With your help, they now have a fully functional water capture and delivery system. Water collected during the rain seasons via eavestroughs along the school can now be used for crop irrigation, cleanliness and cooking. |

 |
Volunteer Quarters
Construction has begun! The building will be close to the school and have multiple purposes, such as accommodate future volunteers who wish to visit and share their time and talents with the orphans at the school. We are developing a volunteer program. We hope this will generate some income for Mercy Centre while providing visitors with an educational, cultural and community-building experience. |

Sewing Machines
Sewing is a highly valued skill in the Bumala community. Young girls at the school are now learning how to sew, fix tattered uniforms and even make their own clothes. The machines are occasionally rented out to locals for a small fee, enabling women in the community to create garments that they can sell for income. It also provides the school a modest opportunity to generate income.

Health is an area that One Child's Village needs your help with. Many of the Mercy Centre children's caretakers can't afford medical attention let alone regular checkups. This is of particular concern for the orphans at the school who are HIV positive. We also recently learned that some of the children are infected with ringworm, jiggers and fungal infection of the scalp. Some of these health concerns are preventable and we want to take proactive measures to decrease these occurrences. Our goals are:
- Provide checkups to the children twice a year. We have secured a local well-trained physician who is willing to do checkups at the school for all 220 children.
Cost: $300 for the day
- Provide shoes for the children to prevent jiggers. Learn more about jiggers...
Cost: $5 per pair per child; $100 will help 20 children
- Provide a health and first aid kit for the school for basic intervention and sanitation (e.g., disinfectants, latex gloves, tweezers to remove jiggers, bandaids, soap, sanitizers, etc.).
Cost: $200 per kit
- Provide better nutrition by improving continuity and diversity of food sources (e.g., beans, maize, rice, milk, eggs, sukumawiki). We know that better nutririon benefits the children's physical health, but it is also a crucial buffer for the various health problems they are susceptible to.
Cost: $7 feeds 1 child for a month; $20 feeds 3 children; $100 feeds 15 children

Please consider donating to help care for an orphan's health. More information about the children's health needs will be available on our website soon, so keep checking back.
You can send a cheque or money order by mail, or make a donation through our secure credit card service. Gifts can be arranged on a one time basis or set up to withdraw monthly semi-annually, or annually. You can even dedicate your gift in honour of a loved one.

Nicole and Troy Farn have been travelling the globe in search of adventure but also to volunteer their time and talent to communities in need. They have found their way to the Mercy Children's Centre school in Bumala, Kenya. With their permission, we share some of their experiences with you. Here is an entry from their travel blog about an activity they did with the children! |

Hands Up!
Thursday we declared as a get-your-hands-dirty kind of day and after a trip to a bookshop and a wedding store in the neighbouring town of Busia, we had had all the supplies we needed to create handprint masterpieces.
The kids rotated in ten at a time and chose two colours of paint. We painted their hands one at a time and encouraged them to put their hands to paper in whatever orientation they wanted.

It was fun to watch the kids’ reaction to the whole process. Some were stoich, not really sure what to make of this, others were intrigued by the feeling of the paint between their fingers, others giggled as the tickly bristles ran over their palms, some were excited to get their turn while others seemed stressed out having been burdened with the responsibility of complete creative liberty. |

Some thought for a great deal of time before placing their hands just so and others squished all their fingers together and slapped their hands down quickly in a big beautiful mess. It was the ones who colored outside the lines so to speak, the ones who turned their pages upside down and backwards, the ones who wrote their names vertically, between their fingers, or up the side of the page, that kept me smiling all day. I have included many sample creations below because I think that they will make you smile too :).

In addition to putting handprints to paper, everyone added their handprint to a school banner. From the students, to the teachers, to the kitchen staff, everyone got in on the action!
Joanne, from the sewing/tailoring class, provided the finishing touch by hemming the sides and adding button holes to the corners to allow it to be hung proudly in the school’s front entry. |
