3-Classroom Addition
(November 2008)

This 3-classroom addition was made possible by generous donors who attended our second annual fundraiser of May 2008. The first Mercy Children's Centre school in Bumala has four classrooms used by 'baby', nursery, pre-unit, and Standard One, Two and Three classes. This project was motivated by the reality that students completing Standard Three would have to go to a different school nearby – which they might not be able to afford or where they might not be welcomed due to stigma associated with being orphaned or HIV positive.

What is special about this addition is that the classrooms are separated by wooden-panel dividers that can easily be opened to convert the classroom structure into a townhall. With this dual purpose in mind, Mercy Centre can provide space for the community to hold gatherings with the option of charging a rental fee for income generation for the school.
