PROJECTS

Computer Lab
(ongoing)

During our visit to Kenya in June 2008, we brought along four refurbished Mac notebooks generously donated by Chris Aanderson with the support of WestWorld Computers Ltd. The laptops serve multiple purposes, from teaching students valuable computer skills to viewing educational movies. The Bumala school of Mercy Children's Centre was able to hire a computer teacher. Local villagers also expressed interest in learning computer skills to increase their job marketability. They pay a small fee for monthly lessons which serves as modest income generation that benefits the school. The laptops are strictly battery-powered for now as the schools are not yet supplied with electricity. Charles, Director of Mercy Centre, recharges the computer battery packs using the generator at his home.

Goals:

  • To add more laptops to expand the computer labs at the Kawangware and Bumala schools and improve the student to computer ratio (currently 4 computers for 440 students!).
  • To purchase and install a wireless USB key for internet access.
  • To install electricity at the Bumala school to power the computers.

Quote from Charles:

Computer classes is from class 3 and 4, plus some few individual who have come to join us at our school and they are paying small amount of fee of 500 Kenya Shillings (about $7.50) per month. With these activities at school, I have employed 2 teachers who are helping our children. Lynet Mulimba is our new computer teacher. Thank all of you for the support you are giving to our children in Bumala.
