Sewing Machines
(May 2009)

During our last visit to Kenya, we learned how important it is for students to also learn practical skills. Sewing is a highly valued skill in the Bumala community. Young girls at the school can learn how to sew, perhaps fix tattered uniforms or even make their own clothes. The machines are occasionally rented out to locals for a small fee, enabling women in the community to create garments that they can sell for income. We think the sewing machines are a particularly good idea that serves both educational purposes and skill development, enhances the school's connection with the community, and provides a modest opportunity to generate income.

Goal: To purchase two more sewing machines for a total of four.

Quote from Charles:

Thank all of you for the support you are giving to our children in Bumala. At the moment I have introduced tailoring lessons to Bumala children as an extra activity to them which is keeping them busy at school. On the side of tailoring, our small girls are doing very well and at the moment they can repair their own uniforms. This is also an extra work that we are doing at Bumala school. With these activities at school, I have employed 2 teachers who are helping our children.
